white-ladies-shirt-300x300 T-shirts for the officeFor most of us, the only T-shirt options we consider for the office are the plain black T-shirt or its plain white cousin, under a smart business suit for women, or teamed with chinos and a casual jacket for men. But there are more options and as offices become more ‘dress-down’, learning how to ring the changes on the T-shirt and businesswear combo can be important if you don’t want to look like somebody with no imagination, or somebody with very few clothes – neither of which is the ideal track to promotion!

Layering your clothing is a good way of playing with colours and styles – and once you get used to the system, it’s an easy way to increase the range of options that your wardrobe offers. There are some simple guidelines to help you:

Layer light to heavy – the clothing closest to your skin should be the lightest weight and fabric, because layering in the other direction is a very ‘evening’ look. Compare, for example, a spaghetti strap T-shirt layered under a white cotton shirt, especially with a stylish monogram – that’s office. A velvet T-shirt under a lace blouse – that’s party!

Layer but stay slim – when you layer clothes, makes sure the bottom layer is tailored to fit your body closely – layers that go over the top can be looser. If you have loose fitting lower layers, you get strange folds and creases and you don’t want your work colleagues trying to guess if it’s your body or your office-wear that makes strange bulges!

Layer colour carefully – it’s best to stick to neutrals – a black T-shirt under a blue work shirt works for both sexes. Yellow under white looks … strange. Cream, grey, white, blue and black can all be worn in various combinations and suggest a professional, rather than a playful personality. Keep the fun colours for your days off.
