Promotional clothing is a valuable tool for any business, and when you are launching something, whether it’s a new brand, a new line or just a new standard in customer service, it’s great to have T-shirts or other clothing that clearly indicate that something new, and special, is happening in your business.
As an example, can you guess the most popular T-shirt in India today? It’s the Hard Rock Café Mumbai tee, launched in 2006 and still a cult item, with a resale value way over anything anybody ever guessed it could reach. Worn by Bollywood movie stars and seen on private yachts and beaches, this teeshirt converted itself from an item of promotional wear into a marker of absolute coolness. And of course the Hard Rock brand gets the very best brand support from the stars and entrepreneurs who sport it.
But sometimes it does seem things might be going a little far. Orbit publishers are promoting a book called The Company by K J Parker – and they’re giving away a special T-shirt to lucky readers – a chain mail one!
The teeshirt comes with instructions on how to don it. “You cannot put it on one arm at a time like a fabric shirt. Instead lay the chain mail flat on the ground, bend over and thrust both arms into the bottom of the shirt. Work your hands through to the end of the sleeves and then begin to stand-up. Get your head through the neck hole and let the chain mail slide down your body.” And, presumably, have a strong friend on hand to pick you up if the T-shirt is too heavy for you. There are also instructions about what to wear under it as the steel rings can cut flesh and how to tie up your hair as the teeshirt will pull it out at the roots. And given all that, wouldn’t most people prefer a printed T-shirt with a chain mail image on it, instead of the real thing? Apart from anything else, how do you wash it?
