Back To Church Sunday

T-shirts are often used to promote charities, bands and, schools. But did you know that T-shirts are now being used across the UK to promote church attendance?

On September 28, 2008 churches across the UK and, indeed, across the world are having Back to Church Sunday. On Back to Church Sunday people are being encouraged to bring a friend with them to church.

According to Inspire magazine, “Thirty eight Church of England dioceses from Cornwall to Newcastle will join with Churches Together in Scotland, the Church in Wales, Baptist, Methodist and United Reformed churches nationwide, Elim Pentecostal churches and Anglican churches in New Zealand and Canada” to participate in this event.

Churches will begin getting ready for this event over the summer. Many will buy Back to Church packs which include invitations, posters, prayer cards, party goods and T-shirts for the welcome team.

Promotional T-shirts are so effective at getting their message across. That is why they are popular for school groups, many charities and many other organizations. Church youth groups and college clubs often create their own t-shirts to advertise their organization or to promote one of their activities or fundraisers. So, it makes sense that a more widespread organization such as Back to Church Sunday would make use of T-shirts.

Back to Church Sunday is getting a double use out of their welcome team T-shirts. Primarily they will be used as uniforms that identify members of the welcome team to church visitors. It allows visitors to know who is running the event and to whom they should address questions. Also, when the welcome team wears the T-shirts after the event, they will continue promoting Church attendance long after the event has ended.

So, just as T-shirts can be useful in promoting charities, bands and schools they can also be useful in promoting Church attendance on 28 September and beyond.

Fighting Crime with Logo T-shirts

Does it matter what’s on your T-shirt? Well, sure it does. You know that your friends, colleagues and even perfect strangers are watching what you wear. But, did you know that CCTV cameras are also tracking your T-shirt logos?

The UK spends more money on CCTV cameras than any other European nation. The purpose of these cameras is to discourage crime and terrorism and to find perpetrators who break the law. However, often criminals’ faces are obscured with hoodie sweatshirts or a bad camera angle.

In order to make the cameras more effective in tracking criminals, the BBC reports that police are proposing a new software program that will automatically search CCTV footage for distinctive clothing such as T-shirt logos.

Once the software identifies the logo on the T-shirt it can then scan footage from other CCTV cameras to track the path of the alleged fugitive and get other camera shots of the alleged fugitive. As the criminal moves away from the crime season he or she may take off his or her hooded sweatshirt or face mask and give another CCTV camera a good like at his or her face.

The police say that although many criminals hide their faces when breaking the law, the often wear common street clothes including outfits with logos when committing crimes. Many criminals also tend to wear the same clothes every time they commit a crime. So, the use of logo based software to track criminal activity may be very useful.

Many people have strong opinions on the use of CCTV cameras on the streets of the UK. However, the reality is that the cameras are there, they are being used and they are expensive. So long as they are being used, police should make the most of them and if analyzing logo based T-shirts and other clothing is helpful, then it might just prevent another crime from being committed.

Alcohol Promotional T-shirts: Are They a Problem?

The Scottish government is concerned about what has been called the nation’s damaging relationship with alcohol. So, on Monday the government purposed “radical” measures to cut alcohol related abuse. The government’s strategy is meant to be long term and comprehensive. It includes the possibility of raising the legal age for buying alcohol to 21. It also includes other measures that effect taxation and pricing, drunk driving penalties and more. Some of the components of the plan, however, are targeted at sponsorship and advertising.

Are Sponsorship and Advertising Really to Blame?

Many entertainment and sporting events are sponsored by the manufacturers of alcoholic products. The entertainment and sporting locations have become key for the alcohol industry. The alcohol industry spends a lot of money on providing caps, promotional Clothing and other advertising at these venues.

The caps and T-shirts also become forms of secondary advertising. People wear them at concerts or games and then take them home and wear them again. Every time they wear them the alcohol is advertising again to a different crowd without spending any more money.

Part of the government’s concern with these type of caps and promotional Clothing is that it seems that the alcohol industry is targeting the type of events that young people attend. They argue that alcohol advertising at these types of events makes alcohol seem innocent by association.

There are many facets of the government’s plan to combat alcohol abuse in Scotland. It will be years before we know the effectiveness of the plan and its individual components. So, while we wait for the plan to take effect and official data to come in, tell us what you think. Will the restrictions on alcohol advertising on caps and promotional Clothing decrease alcohol abuse in Scotland?

CALM

We’ve all read about the various charities that use T-shirts as part of their promotional Clothing. Typically, T-shirts are sold to support a cause or they are worn as part of a walk or bike ride for charity.

However, some charities are coming up with some really creative ways to use T-shirts to raise money. Take, Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) for example. CALM’s mission is to help young men ages 15-35 with their feelings and help prevent suicides.

The first part of CALM’s current fundraising plan is to do a mass mailing to music companies asking for donations of music tracks and money. As part of the mailing the companies will receive a T-shirt with famous musicians who have taken their own lives. The message accompanying the T-shirt is said to read, “We can’t raise the dead, but we can raise awareness.”

Then, CALM plans to try to break the world record concerning how many T-shirts a person can wear at one time. The goal is that two people will each wear 250 T-shirts at the same time. The T-shirts will have the logo of each company that donated to the fundraiser and the event will be posted on YouTube and promoted by the Metro.

This is a great example of how T-shirts can be used creatively to raise money for a good cause. CALM will raise much needed money but they will also raise awareness which is critical to their cause. Their target audience of men aged 15-35 will likely tune into YouTube and be interested in the different music groups that donated to the cause. People will be curious to see if the world record will be broken.

In the end, this is some creative thinking that will have real and substantial benefits for the CALM charity and the people they serve.

Election T-shirts

Last week local political elections were held across England and Wales. As always, supporters of different candidates have been wearing T-shirts in support of their favourite candidates and causes for months leading up to Election Day. For example, “Back Boris” T-shirts have been popular with backers of London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson. Back Boris T-shirt wearers hoped to raise the profile of their candidate and hoped to translate that into more votes on Election Day.

On May 1, 2008 voters went to the polls to choose a new mayor and new assembly. When you add together all of the different offices that were up for elections, it is estimated that approximately 16.5 million ballots were cast in this election.

After the votes have been cast, the hard job of counting all of the votes begins. According to the BBC, London has arguably the most complicated election system in the United Kingdom. So, on May 2, the day after voters cast their votes, election officials gathered at three large count centres across London to count the votes.

At the ExCel count centre, election workers were well organized to do their work of counting votes. Election workers wore specific colour T-shirts to identify their constituencies. For example, the City and East wore aqua green, Havering and Redbridge wore sky blue, Bexley and Bromley wore purple and Greenwich and Lewisham wore Khaki. The T-shirts weren’t so much promotional Clothing as the Political T-shirts were, rather they were a means of organization for the workers.

So, do all of these T-shirts have an impact on the election?

The T-shirts worn at the ExCel count centre certainly do not. They are just worn as a type of uniform to identify workers from particular areas. However, the political T-shirts worn in the months leading up to the elections could have an impact on the political outcome. Either way, all of the T-shirts are worn for a purpose.

Hoodies or Uniforms?

What do you think of when you see people wearing sweatshirts with hoods or “hoodies”? Do you avoid them? Are you concerned for your safety? Or do you just admire their comfortable style?

The Southampton City Council has some definite ideas about hoodies. The City Council has recently made clear that they feel that hoodies represent antisocial and possibly criminal behaviour. And they are strongly encouraging cabbies to stop wearing these kinds of sweatshirts.

The move by the City Council is part of an effort to welcome tourists to Southampton. Southampton is an historic port and an exciting modern city. The City Council wants all those in the hospitality industry to provide a warm welcome to visitors and tourists. According to the City Council, a warm welcome includes appropriate clothing.

Some private hire firms agree. Some will be introducing uniforms within the next year to take any unintended messages out of the way taxi drivers dress. Others are considering implementing a dress code that would prevent cabbies from wearing baseball caps or hoodies while on the job.

Are Hoodies Really a Problem?

According to Bladerunner, the Essex based company that introduced stab proof hoodies, teenagers and gang members are not buying these specially made hoodies. These specially made hoodies have been on the market in England for about a year and the president of the company has recently announced that pensioners, not gang members, are the most common buyer of stab proof hoodies.

In the end a hoodie is just a sweatshirt. It is not always a cause for concern. Sometimes it is just a comfortable garment. Yet, cities and businesses have legitimate concerns about the assumptions that some people draw when they see other people wearing hoodies and that concern needs to be weighed against a person’s right to wear what they want within the guideline set forth by law.

Artur Boroc's Pope T-Shirt Controversy

There are times when plain T-shirts are part of the rules of the game. Take, for example, Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)’s rule that “players must not reveal undershirts that contain slogans or advertising.” It sounds like a reasonable requirement. After all athletic organisations may certainly require teams to wear uniforms that meet certain standards and they most definitely have a compelling interest to keep the crowd of spectators calm and unprovoked. Moreover, this rule seems reasonable since FIFA is not preventing players from wearing T-shirts that contain slogans or advertising. They are just requesting that players not reveal their undershirts if they contain those things.

So, last Sunday when Artur Boroc revealed a shirt with a picture of Pope John Paul II that said “God Bless the Pope” people began to wonder if he would be disciplined. Mr. Boroc revealed his T-shirt at the end of the April 27 Celtic Ranger game. Spokespeople for the Rangers have indicated that they felt that this action by Mr. Boroc was intended to provoke Rangers fans.

However, this week the SFA, the SPL and FIFA have made clear that they will not discipline Mr. Boroc for his actions. The SFA indicated that there was no mention of Mr. Boroc’s action in referee Craig Thomson’s report and, therefore, they would not discipline Mr. Boroc. However, it is anticipated that the SFA will write to the Celtic team and remind them of FIFA’s rules regarding players’ T-shirts. The SPL and FIFA have stated that this was a matter for the SFA to handle and that they would not get involved.

Athletic matches should be about athletic competition. Team members wear plain T-shirts or uniforms to identify themselves as part of the team and fans attend matches to enjoy the sport. Let’s keep the focus on the game so that it can be enjoyed by players and fans alike.

Some people create shirts to express their opinions while others do it to get a word out about a good cause. Some special individuals take the time to create printed t-shirts to show their love and honour for someone who had a great impact on their life. This is what a group of students at Rickmansworth School did for a fellow student who passed away on April 11.

The Warford Observer recently posted a great article on their website entitled 'T-shirt tribute to Cyril'. The article talks about how Cyril recently passed away from a brain hemorrhage after spending eight days in the hospital. Cyril was loved by many at his school and they will never forget how great of a friend he was to all. Because of this great love some students have joined to create over 500 t-shirts with his face printed on it.

The shirts were ready for sale before the funeral so everyone could wear them underneath their attire and then expose them during the wake. They all know that Cyril would appreciate this sentiment and they all want to say goodbye in a unified and respectful way.

To read more about this story read the article at the Watford Observer at http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/localnews/display.var.2224594.0.tshirt_tribute_to_cyril.php.

Unfortunately, the art of Xiang embroidery is dying out and could become obsolete over time if something is not done. Fibre 2 Fashion reports Hunan Arts and Crafts Vocational College is starting a new classes offering lessons on how to do this exquisite embroidery style. The school hopes to bring back this cultural piece of art so the world can continue to appreciate its beauty. Students will learn how to stitch as well as the history of it. Xiang embroidery is comprised of many different forms of art.

Students will need to learn seventy different types of stitches and the colours that Xiang embroidery uses in their images. Students will also have to learn calligraphy, the use of inscriptions in the images and painting.

With this new school, the Xiang embroidery industry can expect to have 100 new embroiders in two years time. In a few years, it is the school's hope they will be able to expand the industry and continue to provide beautiful Xiang embroidery across the globe.

Most of the fashions these stars enter are for adults but there is a few who are looking into children fashion as well. Children fashion can be just as appealing and make just as much of a stir across the world as adult fashion especially when designed by a well-known individual.

From the site fametastic, Britney Spears may be starting her own children's t-shirt line. The star-tracking website reports that she was seen talking to Christian in Beverly Hills. She was at the Ed Hardy boutique shopping for her sister. Apparently, she has been thinking about doing this for a while but with everything goes on in her life, she just hasn't had the motivation.

Britney Spears is a singer who has two children. She recently lost her children due to mental instability and behavior that compromised the safety of her children. She is now working on recovery and showing the court she is well enough to care for her children once again. This is one of main reasons for the t-shirt line, she hopes she will be able to show she is putting her energy into something good again and doing something for children. Since this has not taken off yet there is no word if these will be printed t-shirts or other type. However, some people in Japan may think about their purchased clothing a little more after a recall of 6,000 baby printed t-shirts.

The Mainichi Daily News reports that a company in Osaka has recalled thousands of t-shirts made for infants because of higher than normal levels of formaldehyde. Purchasers informed the company and the Health Centre in Japan reporting their children were developing rashes. These individuals reported the rashes arose directly after wearing the shirts from one of the 37 shops selling the shirts across Japan.

The Health Centre required the company to stop the manufacturing and sale of the shirts for further testing. Testing came back showing the shirts had six times more than what the normal level of formaldehyde in clothing. Now, the company is testing 100,000 other items to make sure they do not have the same harmful levels.

The company believes the ink is responsible for the high levels. The ink came from a China factory, which manufacturers the ink for the Japan based company used for the colour and graphics on the shirts.
To see one of the shirts recalled visit the story at http://mdn.mainichi.jp/national/news/20080405p2a00m0na012000c.html.

Create Your Own Embroidery with a Computer and Sewing Machine

Many people would love to create their own embroidery designs on shirts, caps, and other apparel but may not believe they have the skill or the equipment to do so. Now anyone around the world can take a simple computer design and send it to a sewing machine for embroidery on a shirt or other item.

CNet reports Brother Industries Ltd has designed a new sewing machine especially for computer use and embroidery
. The Innovis RC100 has a USB jack so it can connect to your computer. The USB collects and sends data from your computer and displays what you want it to output on its small LCD screen. Once you are ready for it to start, you simple press a button and the machine does all of the work.

The sewing machine comes with graphics software called Embroidery Pro Ver. 7. It will guide you through the steps of arranging images, finding the one you would like to use, make any changes to it, and then translate the image to a stitching code for the machine. The program will then send the code to the machine and it is stored on a memory card.

The downside is if you want different colours in your pattern, you will need to stop the machine and change it. You will also need to cut your threads after it's complete. If you are planning to embroider some items for a small business, the cost of the machine may be worth it. The investment you will make is $1,500. Learn more about the machine at http://asia.cnet.com.

New Uniforms for Ringmer Community College

Many students enjoy wearing uniforms because it makes a statement about their pride towards a school. Another reason for it is it forms camaraderie among students. However, some students usually want a change in uniform after they have been worn for a certain amount of years. The students of Ringmer Community College asked for this and it was accepted by the school.

Sussex Express reports the standard uniform for Ringmer Community College is black trousers, green fleece, and a white polo shirt. However, since September 2006 senior students have been wearing blazers, shirts, and ties instead. Now the student council wants the whole school wearing the same type of uniform. The school has accepted it and now all students will be required to wear knitted black jumpers, blazer, and shirt with a tie, which represents the specific house they study.

The school has also created a new logo for the blazers. Students, staff, parents, and governors designed the logo. The new uniforms requirements will be in effect in September.

The students are excited about the new uniforms because it shows the school is transforming with modern day. They enjoy letting people know they are part of a school with some of the best engineering, creative and media classes in the area.

Glenn Jones from Threadless Partners up with Despair

Threadless.com is full of printed t-shirt designers who are trying to make it big or just make some extra money on the side. Making it big is what one contributor is on the road to doing because he has now partnered up with a bigger organisation because of his popularity on the t-shirt printing social network site.

Threadless.com is a site where people upload their designs. If the site believes they would be favourable to the members, they choose it to so others can vote on it. The person's design who receives the most votes will have the design printed on shirts by Threadless and sold online. The winner receives $2000, divided as $1500 in cash and $500 in store credit.

Glenn Jones has been a member of the site since 2004 and has won for having the best design 20 times. He has submitted over 100 designs to the site and has had an overwhelming response. People are contacting him, people are blogging about him, and he really has built up quite a big fan base.

Jones thought about opening up his own t-shirt printing business but he didn't feel stocking and shipping would be cost effective for him. Luckily for him, a big name US clothing company contacted him about creating designs for them. The company is Despair and after Jones successfully completed some of the ideas Despair asked from Jones, they are offering to work with him some more and continue to produce his designs. This is perfect for Jones because he can now make more money without having to deal with the production or shipping, which he didn't want to handle in the first place.

Protect Yourself from Knife Attacks with a T-Shirt

Inventor Spot reports there is a new t-shirt, which is comfortable to wear and is knife proof! Now you can confidently walk down the street during all hours of night not having to worry about knife attacks. A Japanese company owned by Nihon Uni designed the shirt. He is originally a uniform manufacturer. He decided that he would branch from uniform industry and try to protect those around him with these protective t-shirts. He first came up with the idea when he was watching the news discussing knife attacks on children and clerks at convenient stores.

The design, taken from military armor, is thin, soft, and flexible so people will want to wear them. The t-shirts are three times stronger than your regular cotton t-shirt. If you are interested in purchasing these t-shirts, be prepared to pay 19,000 to 52,000 yen, which equals to several hundred Euros. I guess there is a price for safety no matter how much you want to help people. Furthermore, the shirts are not entirely knife proof. If someone slashes another person wearing the shirt, there should be no injury but if the person stabs a person directly, the t-shirt offers no protection.

Parents Outraged for Paying VAT for School Uniforms

There are many benefits for children to wear school uniforms. It provides them a common ground so no one has to worry about what clothes to wear and it gives the class and school a mark of prestige. Many parents in the past did not mind buying school uniforms for their children because they believed in the benefits. However, recently parents are outraged because they now have to pay VAT if their children do not fit in children size school uniforms.

Children are taller and wider than they were 20 years ago. Many teens are fitting into adult sized clothing now, which has caused quite a stir. All uniforms for children under 13 years of age are VAT free which helps parents save on this expensive tax. Since many children, under 13 years cannot fit into those clothes they now have to pay 17.5% tax on their uniforms.

Many have launched campaigns such as a school uniform manufacturer and the Schoolwear Association to reduce or eliminate this tax on uniforms. The manufacturer for school uniforms is striving to change the government's mandate and reduce the tax to 5%. The Schoolwear Association would like the tax eliminated with their "Untax Our Teens" campaign.

Many people argue that this increase in clothing size for children says a lot about the nature of obesity in the world and parents should watch what their children eat. Many experts believe the increase more relates to better nutrition for children, which has helped them develop faster than in previous generations.

Woman Creates T-Shirts for Petite Women

The great thing about printed t-shirts is you can customize it to fit your needs and desires. If you don't find something in a store or online you are looking for you can go ahead and make it. That is exactly what one woman did and opened up her own t-shirt line with the help of Hambleton District Council.

The Northern Echo reports that Faye Clements, 24 has decided to open up her own online shop, Shortbred, catering to the frame of petite women everywhere. Clements, petite herself is tired of going to department stores and finding limited amounts of stylish clothing for her frame. She now has taken this into her own hands and is starting her dreams of owning her own clothing line with printed t-shirts.

The t-shirts that Clements is selling on her website at www.shortbred.co.uk have common sayings that people use with petite or short people. These printed t-shirts are humorous and will make both petite women and people around them chuckle.

Clements hopes that these t-shirts will be a big hit because she wants to expand her clothing line and eventually have it in department stores. If you are interested in checking out her new shirts and purchasing one for yourself or a friend, visit her website when it opens this weekend.
