School uniforms change colours and styles when it’s time to attend a university. The days of neatly tucked shirts and skirts and shorts or trousers are exchanged for comfortable come-as-you-are tees and jeans on the college campuses. It’s a ritual and a sign that childhood days are behind and now you can wear what you want to class. The college application cycle is traumatic as students try to find schools they can afford and that offer the types of classes preferred. In fact, the stress has gotten so intense that U.S. parents are exposing their middle school children to the process. The younger children watch older siblings go through the process and wonder what all the fuss is about. The stress comes with the disappointment of not getting into the higher education institution of choice. What parents are teaching their children is that life is not ruined if you have to go to a college that’s further down your list.
You have to wonder why it seems so many things today are complicated and so stressful. That’s why it’s comforting to know that at least the wardrobe can get less complicated and a lot more comfortable. University students love to wear printed t-shirts showcasing their favorite charity or rock group. You can visit any campus in the world and find students everywhere in the same outfits – t-shirts and jeans. You can call it a uniform of sorts, but to the students it’s a transition or a rite of passage. You don’t have to listen to mum anymore when it comes to clothing.
Students faced with the trauma of getting into a university should just remind themselves that this too shall pass, and when it does, a whole new world awaits. The best news is that it’s a whole new world full of tees!,
