Go to the gym and what do you see – people wearing the same type of clothing as if they were putting on uniforms. T-Shirts and shorts or t-shirts and mid-calf stretch pants are worn by exercisers around the world. Of course, that only makes sense because t-shirts and loose fitting shorts are comfortable and give room the body room to move. Now those uniforms are showing up in hotel gyms as facilities add state-of-the-art gym rooms. When you pack for a holiday or a business trip today, you need to include your workout clothes. Hotels began adding gym rooms years ago, but in many cases they were so small you would get claustrophobia or the equipment so old that walking outside looked like a better deal. Now those gyms are being expanded into larger areas with better ventilation and new equipment and that means you need to put on your workout uniform and include a little cardio time during your trip.
Fitness expert Denise Austin told the Birmingham News that, “I’ve seen a huge change. Years ago, there was a small room that you opened with a card key. It would have a little treadmill, a few tiny weights, maybe a mat. And there would be one man in there. It was creepy. But now hotels are trying to make it a priority. They are building full service fitness centers with spas.”
The new hotel fitness centers include advanced workout equipment including treadmills and elliptical machines with televisions. There are mats for stretching and some hotels even offer classes. John Sarver is the director of design and development at Hotel Fitness Club. He was also interviewed by the Birmingham News and he said, “Over the course of 20 years, fitness centers have gone from optional to required.”
So if you’re packing for your next trip, don’t forget your printed t-shirts and athletic shorts. You’re going need to them!
