The Lela Rose and Derek Lam Fall 2011 shows brought back elegantly flowing and glamorous fashions. After a long and difficult economic season, during which clothes went simple and dark, the upcoming fashion season is promising to reverse the trend. Instead of grim reality, the clothes will reflect fun and laughter. The Lela Rose and Derek Lam fashion shows had models wearing clothes styles that have not been seen in a while. There were printed feathers, glittery fabrics and layers with various textures. The colours remained muted but in a delicate way that reminds you more of gently falling leaves and a setting sun.
Designer Lela Rose talked about colours and layers of tulle and mixing sweaters with chiffon. She said, “I think right now fashion is returning back to this glamorous time. We had kind of gotten away from that in the past few seasons. And feathers and opulence. It’s very fun.
But designer Derek Lam focused on lines and shapes and conservative basics. He made the interesting comment that he had uniforms on his made when designing the fashions. He said, “I was really thinking about uniforms. I love the strength of a uniform and I love the sense of purpose of a uniform. So we are really playing with the idea of a uniform.” He went on to say that his signature look is his ‘uniform’ which consists of nice brogues, Levis and a white shirt. Derek Lam relied on gray flannel and black for his designs but softened with colours like smoky blues and burgundy. Don’t misunderstand though – evening wear was full of fun with fur or metallic trims even if the colours remained subdued. Flowing fabrics made the fall colours shimmer and shine.
It looks like fall is going to be an entertaining fashion season this year.
