The weather has been wild around the world with floods in Pakistan and Australia and dozens of tornadoes ripping through the United States. It’s easy to forget how quickly we can lose everything we have worked for in our lives. One bad storm and your home, school, grocery store and job are gone. On the other hand, when natural disasters strike with little warning, it becomes a time when people step forward and generously give of their time and money. The tornadoes that have torn up whole sections of cities in the Southern and mid-west sections of the U.S. also managed to destroy a lot of schools. Children faced with the loss of their homes and schools were traumatized. As much as children say they don’t like school, there is a lot of comfort to be found in routines. When the school is destroyed, the children are bewildered and many are distraught.
That is why some of the city councils like the one in Birmingham, AL handed out hundreds of school uniforms to children who lost everything in the tornadoes. The uniforms were donated by a generous public that wanted to help the children re-establish a normal life as much as possible. The uniforms consist of comfortable polo shirts and dark slacks or polo shirts and skirts.
The generosity of people when tragedy hits never fails to be inspiring. With so much bad news being recounted every day it is moving to read about how people quietly try to help. The same school children who objected to school before the tornadoes were thrilled to get their new uniforms. The damage the tornadoes did to homes, schools and businesses is hard to describe, but it didn’t harm the generosity of the giving people who care about their neighbors.
