A fire broke out in the early morning on Monday in a group of textile and manufacturing mills in Howrah, India claiming at least seven lives. The embroidery mill where the employees worked went up in flames quickly giving those inside very little time to make their escape. While the exact cause of the fire is unknown, some are speculating that the fire was caused by a faulty generator. But this is not the only story to come out of the embroidery mill. It seems that despite laws against child labour, many children are still working in the plants that surround the embroidery mill. Children work from early in the morning until late at night performing jobs that are oftentimes dangerous.
Since many of these children come from impoverished neighbourhoods surrounding the mills, they must go to work in order to help their families survive. This type of child exploitation has been disputed by owners and mangers of the plants who insist that they do not hire children to work for them.
The fire on Monday has also brought to the surface living conditions that some workers must face each day. Many times, they are locked inside mills like the embroidery mills to complete night shifts. Some workers live in the complex because it is inexpensive.
One of the mill owners, Middya Omar Khayyam, said of the labour issues in the complex, “Here, rent is low, tenants are accommodating and unskilled labour is easily and cheaply available.”
Say officials of these supposed illegal practices, “We cannot clamp down these illegal units unless there are complaints.” As long as workers do not complain, there is little that police and other officials can do. The fire on Monday has done little to frighten workers to come forward and explain their living and work situation.

the chance to review the image is great for checking everything over one last time before printing. the time between reviewing the print and delivery was another positive, taking only a couple of days. my friends were really pleased with the finished items. unfortunately i was out when the courier called. he didn't note the date or time of his attempted delivery on his card and he hadn't filled in when or if he would attempt delivery again. on repeatedly phoning the company on a friday between 4:50 and 6 i got no answer. i then tried again on the monday morning, but once again i got no answer. after phoning clothes2order they resolved everything. i realise this is outwith the control of clothes2order, but it soured an otherwise excellent service.
Delighted with the results. Very popular so repeat orders very likely.
great service, no problems at all
