After intense flooding in Malaysia some parts of, many students were left without school uniforms and had to wear their regular clothing when attending classes. This left many students upset about not being able to wear their uniforms. Many students’ families lost everything they owned in the floods, which damaged many homes in the process.Ten year old student Ummi Umairah Yusri, said she felt ‘awkward’ about wearing her every day clothing to school. She also went on to say, “I am very grateful for having such concerned people as many of them helped my family during the nightmare.”
She is happy because new school uniforms were donated to students by Kumpulan Pendidikan Yayasan Pelajaran Johor (KPYPJ). Dr Sa’ari Mohd Noh, chief executive officer of KPYPJ said, “We are trying as much as we can to help the flood affected people as we know that most of them are still studying.” The group will continue to offer aid to flood victims until they are able to function again without help.
Other students were also happy to have new uniforms. “I was excited because I was able to have new school uniforms while my previous ones were stained with mud,” said Fairus Sakawi, also ten. The students were able to pick out uniforms themselves, which made them even happier.
KPYPJ has helped over 40 students by giving them new uniforms and their dignity back.
Said Ahmad Nashakiri, an eleven year old student from the school, “Almost everything in my house was lost in the floods. We had to start everything from scratch.”
Even though there is still more to do in order to rebuild the community, having new uniforms is a start and will give the children renewed hope in their future.
