Among the four winners of the Barenaked Ladies t-shirt contest, which was created to help promote the band’s new tour and also promote graphic designers, artists, and anyone else who had talent, Paul Grant, a graphic design student from Canada, only took four pen strokes to create his printed T-shirts. The winning designs were printed and sold at concerts.“It's four strokes of the pen -- and it's done. Sometimes less is more when it comes to design. White space is a good thing, keeping things simple,” said Grant, who will be seeing the band this evening and meeting them backstage after the show. Grant, who has been a Barenaked Ladies fan since the debut of their first album, ‘Gordon’, was disappointed that his shirts have been sold out as his family and friends will not be able to buy one. “It's kind of flattering, but upsetting,” said Grant after learning that all of his t-shirts have sold out.
Grant’s design is very simple. It is an arrow pointing up with the letters ‘BNL’ on the side. Stephan Page, the lead guitarist of the band, chose Grant’s shirt as his favourite. Originally, the contest was going to yield one winner, but band members could not make up their minds, so they chose four winners instead. All of the winners have had the chance to meet the Barenaked Ladies and their printed T-shirts have been sold at various concerts.
Over five hundred designs were submitted for the contest from Canada and the United States. To be picked as a finalist is an honour for those who have been long time fans of the band. Grant was given a t-shirt with his design printed on it along with other signed merchandise from the band.
