Cricket Team Forced to Give Back Uniforms

Saturday 24th of February 2007 12:55:28 AM

Cricket Team Forced to Give Back Uniformsuniforms, designed by Nike for India’s cricketers, are not allowed to be worn to the World Cup Championships, according to the International Cricket Council because uniforms must be manufactured by a uniform company that is approved by the council. Nike was not one of the manufactures on the list. The team had to return the uniforms if they wanted to play in the World Cup Championships in the Caribbean.

It was after the team had modelled the new uniforms during a press conference that the ICC issued its feelings about the new uniforms. Nike, who said their uniforms are lighter than other uniforms and had sweat absorbing qualities that make them easier to wear, had signed a contract in 2005 with the Indian board that would guarantee uniforms for the next five years.

“Players can only wear clothing approved by the ICC at the World Cup. The ICC clothing will be more or less similar in colour and other aspects, to what was displayed on Monday,” said Ratnakar Shetty, who is an Indian cricket spokesman.

The uniforms, manufactured by Nike, were light blue in colour and were worn by players including team captain Rahul Dravid. The news of this decision by the ICC came only one day after the new uniforms were displayed.

Nike and Indian Board has refused to give statements as to whether they knew what they were doing was against ICC regulations. uniforms manufactured by approved uniform companies will be used instead when the team goes to the World Cup.
