the chance to review the image is great for checking everything over one last time before printing. the time between reviewing the print and delivery was another positive, taking only a couple of days. my friends were really pleased with the finished items. unfortunately i was out when the courier called. he didn't note the date or time of his attempted delivery on his card and he hadn't filled in when or if he would attempt delivery again. on repeatedly phoning the company on a friday between 4:50 and 6 i got no answer. i then tried again on the monday morning, but once again i got no answer. after phoning clothes2order they resolved everything. i realise this is outwith the control of clothes2order, but it soured an otherwise excellent service.

Keeping the Tradition Alive

Monday 05th of March 2007 03:18:15 PM

Keeping the Tradition AliveIn Malaysia, gold-thread embroidery, also known as ‘Tekat’, is used for special occasions such as weddings, and decoration in palaces. This form of embroidery is unique because there are only a handful of people who know who to perform the technique accurately. Sixty-nine year old Azizah Yusuf, who learned to embroider from her mother is one of the best in the business. She has done countless weddings, and is currently working on pillows for the Sultan’s birthday in April. She was also appointed embroidery master by Kraftangan Malaysia.

“In today's world without borders, we have to accept openly the interest shown by outsiders in our heritage, and their products will definitely won't be the same. What more if they're produced using modern technology. embroidery work is not easy. It's a fine handicraft with high aesthetical value and is dependent on skills in drawing the motifs and stitching the patterns. I think outsiders may not be able to produce what we create,”said Kraftangan Malaysia's Perak director Muhammad Awang Teh.

Yusuf continues her work with the help of students and her family. She is very grateful to pass this gift on to future generations. Several of her students have gone on the have successful careers in this business. In addition to the wonderful words of praise from her customers and those who admire her work, Yusuf was awarded the Successful Entrepreneur Award for the Kuala Kangsar parliamentary constituency last year.

“I may not be resolute like before due to my age. But if I don't continue with it I fear that the knowledge and skill will just disappear without anyone inheriting it. As far as I know, I'm the only one at this age still actively involved in the trade. Many of the embroiders have died without anyone inheriting their skills. Thank God, there are some young people who are keen to see that this art form survives the onslaught of modernisation. I'm also thankful that some of my children too are keen on it,” said Yusuf.
