In the booming infant and toddler clothing market, making a statement is becoming more difficult. But for two moms, Michelle Hanson and Dana Steele, who wanted to start their own toddler clothing line using musical images and starting out designing printed T-shirts, they are beginning to see the rewards of all their hard work. Buy soliciting retail outlets, magazines, and small boutiques mainly in Los Angeles and New York, Slick Sugar, has sold over a thousand t-shirts in less than a year and hope to double or triple that number this year. The women, who in addition to being moms, also have full-time jobs besides their clothing business. They decided to split the job duties required to run a business. Hanson oversees the marketing and public relations, while Steele designs and handles production of the t-shirts. Steele, who was taught to sew by her mother and who made her own bridesmaids dresses, does not manufacture the t-shirts herself, but plays an integral part in their production. “I always know what I want to see and if I can't make it, I always have had someone else create it for me from scratch,” said Steele. The shirts are produced by a t-shirt printing company in Los Angeles.
As their business continues to grow, the women will have to start thinking about expanding. This means they will have to hire more employees and alter their business plan. This is both exciting and frightening for any small business owners. But the women seem confident that what they have to offer will be what consumers are looking for. “We can take a risk. We're not going so far into something that there's no way out of it,” said Steele.
