Embroidery Business Still Successful After Seven Years

Tuesday 06th of March 2007 09:04:47 PM

Embroidery Business Still Successful After Seven YearsMarried couple Ralph and Michele Silano bought their home in Delhi, New York, USA after Ralph decided to retire from the Westchester County Police Department seven years ago. The home also came with two buildings in an adjacent lot that used to house an archery shop and an oil company. When Michele decided she wanted leave her job as well, the couple decided they would go into business together and opened Catskill Mountain embroidery & Screen Printing in the old buildings. This spring, they will be expanding their operation to include new showroom and more workspace.

The company, which many people said would not last, designs screen printing for t-shirts,embroidery,and uses heat transfer and dye-sublimation techniques. They share the job duties and cater to a large number of customers. “We've more than doubled sales every year since we've been in business. More than doubled,” said Ralph Silano.

Since the Silano’s are the company’s only employees, they rely on computerised equipment to help them fill orders quickly. For embroidered pieces, after an order has been placed online, the image is downloaded into one of two embroidery machines. “Each one has 15 different needles,” said Silano, who also explained that their latest machine, which will be installed in the spring, will be able to complete six pieces of clothing at one time.

The company is very conscious of what their customers want and try to fill their needs every chance they get. “Most companies like embroidery because it looks better. It looks more professional on a salesman's shirt. Contractors like to get T-shirts and sweatshirts screen-printed,” said Silano.

As the company continues to expand, the couple will be hiring a few people to work with them in order to ensure that the quality of the finished product is always present. Orders are still pouring in mostly from New York and other eastern states, but orders have been coming from far away places including Australia.
