The Embroider’s Guild of America has been hidden in Louisville, Kentucky, USA since 1985. Only those who knew where their cramped offices were could appreciate the many rugs, wall hangings, and other embroidery they have collected over the years. But a recent move to a larger gallery has sparked interest in the collection from those who live in the city and those from further away.“Since we've moved we have had a lot more traffic. At least a couple of people stop by in a day. It used to be a whole week could go by without anyone. We have not been keeping track of how many people are visiting. We have started doing that,” said Karen Wojahn, the president of the guild. People who visit will be able to look at thirty-eight of the guild’s pieces. With over nine hundred in their collection, they will be able to create numerous exhibits for others to enjoy.
The guild also takes donations from the private collections of those who belong to the guild or those who had family members who practiced embroidery. “We do have a number of people that are interested in donating their collections. In order to do that, we are going to need more exhibit space, a lot of larger space. We are an important resource that way,” said Wojahn.
The Embroiders Guild of America was formed in 1858 and settled in New York City, USA. But when rent became too much of a burden in the early 1980’s, the guild decided to move to another city. They settled on Louisville and have been there ever since. Moving to a larger space has given the guild a chance to showcase their collection and to introduce others the art of embroidery.
