The Tufts Feminist Alliance, organised by students from Tufts University, which is located in Medford, Massachusetts, USA has started a t-shirt campaign in order to increase awareness of equal rights and what it means to be a feminist. In an email, Amanda Harris and Elizabeth Fusco, who are co-chairs of the group, stated, “We are working to reform the common misconception that all feminists are 'man-haters' and bra-burners, and to show people that realistically, almost anyone is a feminist if they believe in ... equality in rights and opportunity.” The TFA will also be celebrating women’s history month, which is celebrated in the US in March. printed T-shirts, fliers, and other information will be given out during the month. The t-shirts, which bear the phrase, ‘This is What a Feminist Looks Like’ are an attempt to help people overcome stereotypes that have circulated around feminism for a long time.
Students like Kristine Babick agree that there have been many negative portrayals of feminists in the past. “I would be less inclined to identify myself with feminists because most people, especially men, have preconceived notions about what they think feminists are. A lot of people think of them as being unreasonable and militant,” said Babick. Changing these perceptions is the goal of the t-shirt campaign.
Along with the one-hundred and twenty-five printed T-shirts the group has already given away, they will be giving away buttons as well. While change does not happen overnight, the TFA will continue to make people more aware of what modern day feminism means and how far society still has to go in terms of promoting equal rights to every person living not only in the United States, but in the rest of the world as well.
