In Stockton, California, USA as in many others cities across the country, gang violence has claimed the lives of many over the years. But community service groups like Operation Peacemaker try to dissuade young people from turning to gangs by talking with them about the dangers of gangs, the consequences they may face, and other options that are available. Wearing tan polo shirts, the outreach volunteers are easily recognisable on the school campuses and streets of Stockton.Started in 1997, Operation Peacemaker was helping by reducing the number of murders committed through gang violence. But due a lack of funds and varied viewpoints of the group, they disbanded. Now, with funding from the state of California, the organisation is able to resume its good work. Helping former gang members get counselling, jobs, and other assistance is just one of the many ways the group has been able to contribute to the community.
But more needs to be done, according to many. “It's like a water balloon. You squeeze one end and have success fighting gangs in one city or one county, and the problem pops up one town or one county over,” said Schwarzenegger, about his concerns for officials banning together to fight crime as one. Working with other towns and counties is the only way to stop gang violence from taking more lives.
For now, there are four volunteers that will be patrolling the streets of Stockton in their tan polo shirts spreading the word of hope for those who belong to gangs and those who are considering joining one. With the state monies they have received, the groups can begin to help he community on a regular basis and make a larger impact than ever before.
