When Maria Celeste Chad, who is the founder of NGO Orientavida, an organisation which provide sewing and embroidery jobs to low income families in Potim, Brazil, found out that an order was placed to sew bed clothes for Pope Benedict XVI, she saw it as not just an opportunity to pay her respects, but also as a way to gain exposure all over the world. The bed clothes, which consist of pillow cases and sheets are being embroidered with a technique called boutis. It is a French embroidery technique that takes a long time to complete. One of the pillowcases alone has taken forty-five days to complete. The bed clothes are made of Egyptian cotton and will have and embroidered ‘Pope Benedict XVI’ on the pillowcase. They will be presented to the Pope when he visits the town in May.
Chad, whose husband was once mayor of the small town, decided to start the organisation as a way to help families survive. Women from Potim and neighbouring villages take embroidery work home with them and are paid based on what they complete. The organisation has helped many families over the eight years it has been in operation. “I myself do not know how to thread a needle. But I know how to sell very well,” said Chad. Clothing, pillows, bags, and other items have been sold in many cities across Brazil and in other countries including Spain, Portugal, and France.
With the Pope’s visit, Chad hopes to bring more awareness of the organisation to other regions in Brazil and beyond. It is her dream to expand the operation and help others who are in need of employment. Chad has already expanded the types of items made to include t-shirts, adult clothing, and children’s clothing in addition to embroidery.

the chance to review the image is great for checking everything over one last time before printing. the time between reviewing the print and delivery was another positive, taking only a couple of days. my friends were really pleased with the finished items. unfortunately i was out when the courier called. he didn't note the date or time of his attempted delivery on his card and he hadn't filled in when or if he would attempt delivery again. on repeatedly phoning the company on a friday between 4:50 and 6 i got no answer. i then tried again on the monday morning, but once again i got no answer. after phoning clothes2order they resolved everything. i realise this is outwith the control of clothes2order, but it soured an otherwise excellent service.
