Aaron Johnson, owner of Unitees, a t-shirt printing company, has been in the business since the late 80’s. After changing the name of his company and location once or twice, Johnson and his company have been producing printed T-shirts in Washington, DC, USA for the past nine years. Johnson is more than a businessman, however, he also volunteers his time teaching the next generation about the business and how they can be successful at it also. “We felt that it is important to give back to the community, thereby leaving it a better place then we inherited,” said Johnson. In order to make his business a successful one, Johnson has had to sacrifice his own free time to make sure orders are sent out accordingly. Unitees currently prints about 95 shirts per hour. “Sacrifice has sustained Unitees. I had to work long hours and miss a lot of my children's activities to maintain my business. But I am my own boss and that gives me more personal freedom,” said Johnson.
Being a business owner in the t-shirt printing industry isn’t always easy. With tough competition, equipment costs, and merchandising, being able to print high orders is essential when trying to remain in business. But having friends and a mentor like Jonah Millard has helped Johnson get through the tough times. “On many levels, Jonah deserves a lot of credit. He is like a father figure to me. He invented and built machines to meet the needs of my printing company,” said Johnson.
Since t-shirt printing is as much about pleasing the customer as it is about getting an order out on time, Johnson is quick to point out the pros and cons of being the boss by saying, “When you work a job you usually have one boss. When you are an entrepreneur, every customer is your boss.”
