For many, excessive sweat is not only embarrassing, it can also hinder job performance, personal relationships, and positive self-esteem. Those who sweat through more than one shirt per day, or have to wipe their hands before shaking another person’s may be suffering from hyperhidrosis. This is the technical term for excessive sweating. About eight million people suffer from this disorder, but few seek treatment because it is embarrassing to talk about. While there are various treatments available, special printed T-shirts that contain sweat, and surgeries that cut off nerve endings to sweat glands, many people do not take advantage of them and instead live day to day sweating and trying to hide it. “This is not an anxiety-related disorder that people have control over, it's a medical condition and looks to be genetic," says Dr. Dee Anna Glaser, professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.
printed T-shirts help keep sweat from being noticed by others, but they cannot get to the root of the problem. New treatments using Botox, which is a toxin that suppresses nerve endings and used mainly for cosmetic purposes, has the same effect on sweat glands. While many insurance companies do not cover these types of treatments for those with hyperhidrosis, many in the medical community think they should. "Most insurers consider this a cosmetic procedure so it's not medically reimbursable. This is a disease - a disorder. It's not cosmetic. If it were extract of banana, nobody would care, but it's Botox and that carries a cosmetic connotation,” said Dr. Joel Schlessinger, president of the American Society of Cosmetic Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery.
