Sold Gold Rags, started last year by Oliver Kupper, who earned a small amount of fame by being seen in a Coca-Cola commercial, is a t-shirt printing company he started in his apartment. Finding inspiration in vintage clothing he found at flea markets and vintage stores, the printed t-shirts are available in a few different styles with a summer line debuting in May. So far, Kupper has been able to sell his shirts in seven California, USA boutiques including Yellow Dog and Green Tea. “I've always known that I could be a creator, but was always hesitant about it because of the financial aspect of it,” said Kupper. While finding artistic inspiration wasn’t the problem, finding the space to create became a problem. “I was totally blind as to what was going to happen. I just wanted to see if I could do it. It all worked and we're still growing. It became too overwhelming to produce all my pieces there [his apartment]. When I was finished there would literally be T-shirts everywhere, dying, curing, waiting to be cut and tagged for delivery. There were even T-shirts on my bed,” he said. Kupper decided it was time to find retail space in order to allow his business to grow.
Now that his printed T-shirts have become more popular, Kupper has started seeing them on the street. “I'll be in the Palisades, sitting with coffee and a girl will walk by in one of my pieces and it will freak me out and then make me feel proud,” he said. But this has not stopped him from creating new designs for his shirts. “I want to involve myself as much as possible in art and not let myself become deceived by modern popular culture and become jaded and delusional,” Kupper said.
