Golf clothing manufacturer, Ashworth, Inc., has expanded into several different lines of golf clothing and casual wear over the years in order to meet the demands of those on and off the course. When the company first started in 1987, they manufactured basic golf attire that included polo shirts and cotton pants. Now the company has four labels it designs under which include a line of sports coats, children's golf clothing, and office attire. They have also begun designing clothing that helps protect the skin from sun damage, water resistant clothing, and clothing that is lightweight and easy to move in.Most of the clothing is manufactured in Asia using high tech assembly lines that move shirts and other clothing from one station to the next automatically. embroidery machines are used to personalize shirts and other items. Other machines pack and ship the clothing. All of this is done using very little personnel. Radio tracking systems are used to fill orders as they are entered into the computer system.
This form of manufacturing is more cost effective for business like Ashworth, Inc. because of the volumes of orders they receive. Once an order has been placed, it is broken up into different computer code that is sent to different stations around the warehouse. As the order passes through the stations, the work is completed on the clothing. Machines that have to be operated by employees are given specific instructions as to which colour thread to use when sewing pieces of clothing together. System production has improved by over three-hundred percent since it was introduced.
