As the Green movement continues to grow, school uniforms made from recycled materials are now available in the UK. In order to compete with other uniform manufacturers, M&S and BHS are introducing uniforms for all ages made from recycled plastic bottles. While the cost is slightly higher than second hand uniforms, they are less expensive than most of the new items children need for school. The process is simple. Plastic bottles are melted down so a plastic, polyester yarn can be created. The yarn is used to make clothing such as fleece, polo shirts, and trousers. Along with these items, organic cotton shirts supplied by Fair Trade manufacturers will also be sold.
"We're constantly looking at ways to give our customers the most innovative, best value and highest quality schoolwear on the high street. Using recycled polyester is another way that we're doing this,” said M&S Director of menswear and boyswear, Julian Kilmartin.
BHS, British Home Stores, is also introducing a new line of school uniforms that uses that same plastic yarn.
This trend will be seen in other clothing lines as well. M&S will be introducing a line of menswear clothing that includes fleece and polo shirts. BHS has been manufacturing outerwear for a few years using this technology.
As prices for school uniforms continues to rise, finding less expensive alternatives such as buying second hand items or new items that have been recycled, is how many parents who have multiple children in school are able to afford what their children need. Many schools are also changing their uniform policy by not requiring blazers and other more expensive items.
