the chance to review the image is great for checking everything over one last time before printing. the time between reviewing the print and delivery was another positive, taking only a couple of days. my friends were really pleased with the finished items. unfortunately i was out when the courier called. he didn't note the date or time of his attempted delivery on his card and he hadn't filled in when or if he would attempt delivery again. on repeatedly phoning the company on a friday between 4:50 and 6 i got no answer. i then tried again on the monday morning, but once again i got no answer. after phoning clothes2order they resolved everything. i realise this is outwith the control of clothes2order, but it soured an otherwise excellent service.

Licensing Rights of Characters on T-shirts

Wednesday 20th of June 2007 04:28:20 PM

Licensing Rights of Characters on T-shirtsBefore a famous character ever makes it onto printed T-shirts, buttons, posters, and other items, they must first be licensed and then sold to companies who want to produce the merchandise. The first successful merchandising effort was in 1977 when the movie 'Star Wars' became a hit. Since then, marketing companies and entertainment companies have been making a profit buying licensing rights to artwork, cartoons, and television and movies characters.

'Happy Bunny', which is a cartoon character created by Jim Benton, has been selling successfully for the past ten years. The bunny, along with its funny sayings, is can be found on printed T-shirts, stickers, and other clothing. Sold exclusively in Hot Topic stores for two years, other retailers have now bought licensing rights including the department store Kohl's.

"You have to be real careful about how you manage a property. The temptation is to sell it to anyone as fast as you can," said Benton, who is currently developing other characters in the hopes to license them as well.

Because of the popularity of printed T-shirts and because licensing rights can be difficult to attain due to the amount of competition by larger companies, many online t-shirt vendors rely on original designs to sell their product. Threadless.com, for example, relies on design submissions and visitor votes when choosing which designs to sell. This is one way to avoid getting into legal troubles when designing merchandise.
