Gildan, after a strenuous review process by the Fair Labor Association, was granted FLA accreditation and is the first company to receive the accreditation for being a supplier of sportswear and a manufacturer of its own brand of sportswear. The review included audits of training programs, monitored protocols, and gathering data from companies who are supplied by Gildan to ensure that customer service had been achieved.Known for supplying other clothing manufacturers with blank t-shirts and sweatshirts that are used for t-shirt printing, Gildan released its own line of printed t-shirts and socks that are doing well in the market. In order to remain competitive, the company had to close two factories in Canada and other factories in the US and Mexico, and move to the Caribbean. This move was criticised by some in the labour and manufacturing industries.
Gildan and New Era Cap, a manufacturer of sports headgear, both received accreditation at the same time. “These companies have made great strides to develop workplace standards that support the rights of workers and comply with FLA requirements," said Auret van Heerden, FLA President and Chief Executive Officer.
In 2006, Gildan incorporated an EMS (environment management system) into most of its factories in order to improve working conditions, process improvement, and customer service. This year, the company plans to incorporate the systems into all remaining factories so each factory within the company will be run the same way.
