Band t-shirts have always been a staple at concerts, small venues, and the homemade creations of fans, but now a new book explores the history of these printed T-shirts and why they are still popular today. 'The Art of the Band T-shirt' is broken up into sections that explain the origin of the t-shirt to its modern day uses by bands to promote their music. The earliest known band t-shirt according to the authors were t-shirts that featured Elvis Presley from 1956. It wasn't until concert promoter Bill Graham thought they would be a great marketing tool that they become forever associated with band promotion. Since then, promotional Clothing has been sold at every musical venue. At the recent Glastonbury Festival, clothing designer, Stella McCartney, sold five hundred signature t-shirts to those who wanted mementoes of the occasion.
Even though the book includes information and pictures about the rise of band t-shirts, it does not spend too much time on fan creations, which are still very popular today. Bands like The Barenaked Ladies held a t-shirt design contest in January 2007 to kick off their latest concert tour. Fans were allowed to submit creations that were judged by the band. The winner's shirts were sold at the concerts.
Band t-shirts are also used for charity purposes. Popular artists such as Shakira, GreenDay, and others have created shirts sold at Hard Rock Café locations and online for various causes. Interest in owning printed T-shirts created by artists has helped raise a lot money for various charities over the years.
