While many people enjoy wearing printed T-shirts with funny sayings or pictures on them, most people do not consider their shirts works of art. But for Jeff and Lydia Badger, owner of Small Victory Studios, a t-shirt printing company, limiting the number of t-shirts printed, they are creating wearable art that everyone can wear. Made from organic cotton and environmentally safe dyes, the shirts are available through their website and in a few small shops in Portland, Maine, USA. Each month, a t-shirt design created by local artists will be showcased and sold in limited quantities. Fans of this concept can sign up for the t-shirt of the month club and receive a new shirt each month.
“We`re taking this ubiquitous piece of American fashion and attempting to reconsider it and not let it blend into the background. When you put on a T-shirt with something printed on it, you`re walking around with a message emblazoned on your chest. I`m surprised people can put on a shirt from the Gap -- you`re basically paying the Gap to advertise for them,” said Badger.
Local artists are thrilled to be a part of the process. “A T-shirt is simple, it`s not a gallery, not a complex piece of artwork that can`t be understood by everyone out there,” said Alex Rheault, one of the featured artists.
Even though selling t-shirts online or creating a t-shirt of the month club is nothing new in the world of online t-shirt printing, Small Victory Studios is trying to take the t-shirt in a new direction – from everyday piece of clothing to a piece of wearable art.
