Creating a hostel named the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) house for UK families to stay while relatives in the military are being treated at the nearby Headley Court military rehabilitation centre has been under controversy since the plan was announced. While the plan was approved to build a hostel on Grays Lane, which is located in Ashstead, UK, there were residents who objected to the idea stating various reasons including increased traffic and possible terror threats. To help the SSAFA in their fundraising efforts, a company called hand-madebymachine has printed T-shirts and embroidered polo-shirts with the logo ‘NIMBY’ on them, which stands for ‘not in my backyard’. Even though the shirts are meant to be humorous, many residents of Ashstead are not happy.
So far over 1,300 polo shirts and t-shirts have been sold to those who live in the area and those who want to pledge their support for the hostile. "It sounds absolutely ridiculous because they got what they wanted. I am sure SSAFA is not this way inclined, but it is going to muck up all the support they have because of their attitude,” said Ashstead Home Residents’ Association when he heard the news of the shirts and their popularity.
The SSAFA has heard about the fundraising effort, but is not affiliated with it in any way. "I did hear about people trying to raise money to help us. There was so much momentum from the planning application and there was a feeling that people did not want to let it lie,” said the Director of the SSAFA, Athol Hendry.
