Firefighters in Texas are getting their wish, permission to wear shorts under their protective gear while working and fighting fires. It makes sense that firefighters should be able to wear clothing which is appropriate for hotter work environments but until recently, these firefighters' uniforms
consisted of synthetic pants in a dark blue color with button up light blue shirts. Firefighters can thank their union Local 624 for making the effort to fight for this change in uniforms and other important operational changes. The FireRescue website reports that the union showed the committee the shorts which helped the committee approve the change. These shorts are now on order for all the firefighters. They also are working on getting some polo shirts and moisture-absorbing shirts to be approved along with the shorts.
Other changes that the union have made possible for firefighters is the ability for the firefighters who have paramedic training to be able to respond to those in need if they are the first arrive on the scene. Life support equipment would be placed on the firetrucks so that trained firefighters could use them as a backup in case the ambulance didn't reach the victim first.
Uniform changes may not mean much to some but those who have to wear weather inappropriate clothing everyday at their workplace have to suffer through uncomfortable temperatures. This lowers productivity and morale which are two of the biggest contributors to successful operations in a work environment. Ensuring that your employees look professional and feel good in their clothes, will help you run a much more lucrative business.
