The Brampton Guardian reports that Dufferin-Peel Catholic School is making a conscience step in what they are providing to their students for uniforms. Recently in the news, many have been vigilant of the poor work conditions of sweatshops around the world and companies have started reacting to this and not standing for it any long. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic School District is one of these who are now making an effort to ensure that the uniforms that the students, faculty and other staff are wearing come from uniform manufacturers where employees are working under ethical and humane conditions. The Dufferin Peer Catholic School District Board is working with WRC or Worker’s Right Consortium to help determine the conditions of the places the uniforms are being manufactured. The board has already stopped working with some of the manufacturers that they have been working with because they refused to meet with the standards that the school is demanding. The school is looking at these China based factories and implementing standards for work conditions that are higher than the standards put in place by the United Nations International Labour Oragnisation.
Currently the Dufferin-Peel Catholic School is working with R.J. McCarthy, LTD in supplying the uniforms for the school. This company has agreed that they will inspect and ensure that the uniforms are coming from sweat-free shops. The Catholic School hopes that this advancement will show its students that everyone needs to pay more attention to where their clothing is produced and make conscience efforts in improving work conditions so that people around the world do not have to work in deplorable conditions like sweatshops.
