Nicola Dowing of Manchester Evening News reports that four weeks ago, the Manchester police department conducted a public poll on the proposed change of uniform for the Greater Manchester Police. The police now wear shirt and ties under a black vest type shirt. The proposed change in uniform will replace the shirts and trousers with a t-shirt and a cargo style pant. Four weeks ago, The Police Federation released a poll to the public to gauge the public’s opinions of the new uniforms. The polls have now closed and the results were in favour of a change in uniform. More than 1,000 people placed their vote when the polls were open.
Now that 70% of the people have voted ‘yes’ on changing the uniform, 100 police will wear the new uniforms in the new year for a trial period of 3 months. This trial run of the uniforms will help the police decide if they feel that the uniform change would be beneficial for the entire Greater Manchester Police.
The Police Federation is making every attempt to find a comfortable uniform for the Great Manchester Police. It was important to find out what the public was thinking about the change before having the police themselves decide. These police need to continue to look professional and the only people who can tell The Police Federation if the uniforms continue to look official is the public. Now the police are free to decide if the uniform is functional as well as good looking.
