There are many benefits for children to wear school uniforms. It provides them a common ground so no one has to worry about what clothes to wear and it gives the class and school a mark of prestige. Many parents in the past did not mind buying school uniforms for their children because they believed in the benefits. However, recently parents are outraged because they now have to pay VAT if their children do not fit in children size school uniforms. Children are taller and wider than they were 20 years ago. Many teens are fitting into adult sized clothing now, which has caused quite a stir. All uniforms for children under 13 years of age are VAT free which helps parents save on this expensive tax. Since many children, under 13 years cannot fit into those clothes they now have to pay 17.5% tax on their uniforms.
Many have launched campaigns such as a school uniform manufacturer and the Schoolwear Association to reduce or eliminate this tax on uniforms. The manufacturer for school uniforms is striving to change the government's mandate and reduce the tax to 5%. The Schoolwear Association would like the tax eliminated with their "Untax Our Teens" campaign.
Many people argue that this increase in clothing size for children says a lot about the nature of obesity in the world and parents should watch what their children eat. Many experts believe the increase more relates to better nutrition for children, which has helped them develop faster than in previous generations.
