When we buy clothing, you seldom think about chemicals in the material that could cause harm to our children or ourselves. However, some people in Japan may think about their purchased clothing a little more after a recall of 6,000 baby printed t-shirts.The Mainichi Daily News reports that a company in Osaka has recalled thousands of t-shirts made for infants because of higher than normal levels of formaldehyde. Purchasers informed the company and the Health Centre in Japan reporting their children were developing rashes. These individuals reported the rashes arose directly after wearing the shirts from one of the 37 shops selling the shirts across Japan.
The Health Centre required the company to stop the manufacturing and sale of the shirts for further testing. Testing came back showing the shirts had six times more than what the normal level of formaldehyde in clothing. Now, the company is testing 100,000 other items to make sure they do not have the same harmful levels.
The company believes the ink is responsible for the high levels. The ink came from a China factory, which manufacturers the ink for the Japan based company used for the colour and graphics on the shirts.
