Election T-shirts

Monday 05th of May 2008 01:50:30 AM

Election T-shirtsLast week local political elections were held across England and Wales. As always, supporters of different candidates have been wearing T-shirts in support of their favourite candidates and causes for months leading up to Election Day. For example, “Back Boris” T-shirts have been popular with backers of London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson. Back Boris T-shirt wearers hoped to raise the profile of their candidate and hoped to translate that into more votes on Election Day.

On May 1, 2008 voters went to the polls to choose a new mayor and new assembly. When you add together all of the different offices that were up for elections, it is estimated that approximately 16.5 million ballots were cast in this election.

After the votes have been cast, the hard job of counting all of the votes begins. According to the BBC, London has arguably the most complicated election system in the United Kingdom. So, on May 2, the day after voters cast their votes, election officials gathered at three large count centres across London to count the votes.

At the ExCel count centre, election workers were well organized to do their work of counting votes. Election workers wore specific colour T-shirts to identify their constituencies. For example, the City and East wore aqua green, Havering and Redbridge wore sky blue, Bexley and Bromley wore purple and Greenwich and Lewisham wore Khaki. The T-shirts weren’t so much promotional Clothing as the Political T-shirts were, rather they were a means of organization for the workers.

So, do all of these T-shirts have an impact on the election?

The T-shirts worn at the ExCel count centre certainly do not. They are just worn as a type of uniform to identify workers from particular areas. However, the political T-shirts worn in the months leading up to the elections could have an impact on the political outcome. Either way, all of the T-shirts are worn for a purpose.
