With the United States undergoing floods in Iowa, many people have wondered what they could do to help those in need. Marcus Henthorn, a 23-year-old, didn’t wonder--he took action. He came up with the idea to make printed T-shirts to benefit the victims of the 2008 floods as he watched rising water inch closer and closer to the Coralville Marriott.
In good humour of the situation, the printed T-shirts read “Dam!!! Now there are 2 states with 10,000 lakes…” Fifty percent of the profits are going to the American Red Cross Central Iowa Chapter for distribution to flood victims in the area.
Floodwaters wreaked havoc over much of the state in May and June. The disaster has prompted an outpouring from people and businesses all over the world. While watching the futile attempts of the sandbag lines and accepting the inevitability of the floods, Henthorn began to make his plans.
Henthorn designed the shirt from pencil sketches he made during a lunch break. He contacted a Des Moines clothing store to see if printing a few T-shirts would be possible. Henthorn said, “Here we are sitting in a state that just went under 10 feet of water and it’s a unique thing because it lightens the mood.”
The first printed T-shirt was sold on June 20, 2008. Henthorn said, “We just wanted to go out and have something to remember that day. I thought no one would ever want to look at the shirt, but we’ve had an unbelievable run so far.”
Henthorn continued by saying, “It’s better than asking for donations because you’re giving someone something. I can’t stop helping now that I’ve started. This whole effort is about teamwork and everyone coming together. To be able to do our part and help out, it’s a nice feeling.”
