John Lewis and H&M Defy High Street Gloom with Higher Clothing Sales

Tuesday 19th of August 2008 02:27:58 PM

John Lewis and H&M Defy High Street Gloom with Higher Clothing SalesThe word on High Street is that the UK is about to slip into a real and deep recession if interest rates are not adjusted soon. The housing and retail sectors have done poorly with sales being down significantly. In addition, inflation is on the rise. One of the driving forces behind the decline in retail sales is the performance within the clothing industry. An article in the British Retail Consortium reported that, “Clothing, footwear, homeware and other discretionary items were hit particularly hard by the ‘squeeze on household budgets.’”

Yet just when things are looking completely gloomy, a couple of clothing companies posted increases in sales. The department store chain John Lewis was one such company. The other was H&M a fashion retailer. The upturn in sales is due to higher than normal summer sales.

The sales increases were significant too. John Lewis reports that weekly sales are up by 9.3%. H&M is a Swedish owned clothing retailer interested in having more of a presence in the UK. The company reported an increase in July sales by 15%.

John Lewis is a store which caters to the middle class spender. When its sales decline, it often indicates a general slowdown in spending by the middle class. The Scottish John Lewis store locations reported mixed results with one store posting sales increases and two reporting declines.

H&M attributed its sales increases to shoppers looking for bargains. The shoppers were purchasing all kinds of clothing from fashion styles on sale to polo shirts embroidered with logos. H&M sells moderately priced clothes, so when they are put on sale, there are many bargains shoppers enjoy finding. H&M is pleased the chain has positioned itself to outperform the clothing market in general.
