Even the Uniforms on Athlete's Backs Controlled by Rules

Friday 22nd of August 2008 05:09:24 PM

Even the Uniforms on Athlete's Backs Controlled by RulesThe uniforms, including the t-shirts, have been a colourful addition to the Beijing Olympics. In effect the clothing represents an advertisement and celebration of the athlete's country in addition to providing comfortable and functional attire. The uniform designs and logos vary by country, but what most people don't know is that they are controlled by a set of rules.

The International Olympic Committee has an extensive set of rules related to uniforms. The rules are obviously quite specific, because they comprise the equivalent of a phone book sized document. The goal of the rules is to make each country as identifiable as possible to the largest number of people in the world while also giving countries a way to express their uniqueness. This has led to some interesting logos and scripting on the back of the uniforms.

The rules require the names of the countries be written on the front using the Latin alphabet. Some countries still use their native language, but print the word with the Latin alphabet. A good example is Germany which chose "Deutschland" for the front of their uniforms. In many cases that's not possible, which is why you see the names of countries repeated on the back of uniforms using their own language and a style that reflects their culture. All of the logos used on the uniforms, including any promotional lothing, are also regulated. Most of the uniforms were designed by the American company Nike this year, but competitive clothing designers around the world are trying to take some of their business away.

Nike spends a lot of time designing uniforms that make the athletes feel quite special. The uniforms represent much more than clothing. The uniforms represent the time and effort each man and woman put into preparation for becoming an Olympic athlete. Only the best of the best get the chance to wear the Olympic uniform. Nike's Olympic design director said, "When we talked to (the) track and field athletes from the U.S.A., they said they put on these uniforms and fell like a superhero."

To those of watching these athletes in their uniforms each day perform unimaginable fetes of endurance and strength…..they are superheroes.
