More Fashion Clothing Buyers Choose U.S. Brands

Wednesday 27th of August 2008 04:56:58 PM

More Fashion Clothing Buyers Choose U.S. BrandsThe devaluation of the US dollar is having an impact on fashion retailers. US retailers have been strong supporters of European brands by carrying many of them in their stores on a regular basis. This was predicated on a strong US dollar though. With the weakening of the dollar has also come a weakening of the purchases of European brands and materials.

Recently the Magic Marketplace apparel trade show was held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The sellers at the show reported to Reuters they have seen "more interest in home grown labels from international buyers". Up to this point the buyers had concentrated on Europe as their source of fashion clothing and fabric. But all fashion categories including promotional clothing, t-shirts, footwear, embroidered shirts, dresses, jeans and so on are also produced by American fashion designers and companies making is easy for international retailers to shift their purchases.

The biggest change in purchasing has been seen in designer brands, because these brands have seen the largest price increase due to the weak dollar. The difference between the value of the Euro and the value of the dollar has resulted in European designer fashion becoming more expensive. The American brands are seen as a way to control prices while maintaining fashion standards. One European retailer reported they had found European brands to be up 20 to 40% whereas US brands had only increased 5 to 10% even using European fabrics. Since many European brands require minimum orders, the US stores often have no choice but to drop the labels to control costs.

The European fabric mills have not been completely abandoned, but the weak dollar's impact on the fashion industry is just another example of how currency rates have a direct impact on clothing manufacturing, pricing and label choice. Next time you buy one of the fashionable printed t-shirts, you'll now be wondering if it's American or European fabric that went into its construction. And don't be surprised when shopping American stores and websites if you see more US brands then you have in the past.
