Fast Fashion Should Not Be in Style

Thursday 28th of August 2008 02:46:23 PM

Fast Fashion Should Not Be in StyleThe connection between fashion and recycling and waste management may not seem apparent at first glance. But the concept of “fast fashion” has come to the limelight capturing the attention of eco-friendly clothing consumers.

Fast fashion at one time meant primarily clothing that was quickly reproduced after the newest designs were shown on the runways. It’s also been used to refer to fashion that is rapidly introduced during holiday seasons for shoppers. But now the term is becoming more and more commonly used to refer to clothing that is made to last a short time and then be discarded.

And that’s where the connection between fashion and recycling becomes crystal clear. Paul Ozanne is the coordinator at the UK Salvation Army which handles 2,750 used clothing centres in the UK. He promotes the purchase of good clothing intended to last for a long while. Because fast fashion is not intended to last, it is made with cheap fabric. This has several environmental consequences. The clothing is discarded quickly which fills the landfills. The material is often produced in countries exploiting labour in order to keep the costs low. In addition, clothing manufacturing uses natural resources. The more fast fashion that is produced, the greater the impact on the environment.

The House of Lords Science Committee published a report named “Waste Reduction” the third week of August. The report made it clear that fast fashion designed to be thrown away is difficult to recycle. UK consumers spend over £23 billion per year on clothing and footwear. That’s a lot of dresses, shoes and embroidered shirts. Paul Ozanne was quoted as saying, “People should buy good quality clothing which in the longer term lasts longer and retains its value rather than buying into ‘fast fashion’.”

The continued efforts to educate the public are expected to bring the problem to light and hopefully change consumer buying patterns. Buying high quality clothing that will last a long time, including the ever popular printed t-shirts, is the eco-friendly thing to do.
