USA Textile Industry Lobbies President for Import Monitoring Expansion

Thursday 09th of October 2008 03:12:02 PM

USA Textile Industry Lobbies President for Import Monitoring ExpansionGovernmental import policies have a big impact on the control of illegal or cheap imports. The United States textile industry has lobbied the President and the Commerce Secretary to extend the Textile Monitoring Program to Chinese imports. Currently there is a textile bilateral agreement between the 2 countries which is set to expire 12/December/2008. The lobby group is asking for the Textile Monitoring Program to include China beginning 1/January/2009.

The current program monitors Vietnamese clothing and textile imports including clothing such as printed t-shirts. The lobby group included textile trade groups, labor unions and even congressmen and congress women. The textile industry is quick to point out that keeping the textile manufacturing sector financially healthy can help boost the ailing economy. Predatory imports undercut the price and quality of market goods, and they are often produced by people who are not earning a living wage. In the USA there are over 500,000 textile workers whose jobs need protecting.

The President of the National Textile Association, Karl Spilhaus was quoted as saying, "Extending the TMP program to China once safeguards expire will provide the U.S. government with the necessary resources to effectively track China's import and pricing practices. This will enable it to react quickly if China illegally dumps its imports into the U.S. market and harms our domestic workforce, as well as the vulnerable in developing countries."

Ruth Stevens is the Executive Director of the U.S. Industrial Fabrics Institute. She said, "By extending and expanding the monitoring program, the United States would be sending a clear message that it won't allow illegally priced goods to be dumped into the market." It is the responsibility of the U.S. Department of Commerce to monitor what is called “dumping”. Dumping is when there is a significant increase in imports with a subsequent price droop.
