Europe, especially the UK, has led the way in the crusade to develop economically and environmentally sustainable clothing. In December, a two-day seminar will be held to discuss the many issues related to creating eco-friendly and sustainable fashion. This is a growing movement that is in response to consumer demands that retailers take responsibility for their decisions as they relate to economic conditions as related to fashion production. The sustainable clothing movement is affecting all retail clothing sales from embroidered shirts to high street fashion. The seminar topics will discuss such issues as the use of pesticides to grow textile materials, landscape management which protects growing lands, efficient use of natural resources such as water and oil, how to efficiently accommodate climate changes, and the need to eliminate the use of child labour. The discussions will centre on how to respond to shifting consumer attitudes concerning clothing.
The seminar will be held in Copenhagen in early December and is jointly sponsored by the Organic Exchange and the Dutch fashion transparency label MADE-BY. There will be a wide variety of speakers and training workshops offered. Speakers such as the CEO of the Jackpot Brand Sune Bjerragaard, the CEO of NOIR Peter Ingwersen, and representatives from the Pesticide Action Network will discuss the need for sustainable fashion and the steps currently being taken to protect the environment. All areas of textile production will be covered from harvesting of organic cotton to the dyeing and finishing process. Also offered will be training sessions on sustainable textile certification procedures.
The coordinator of the Copenhagen event, Nany Trivita Kusuma said, “If you are involved in supply chain management, buying, designing, fabric sourcing, marketing, CSR, are a manager/director of a clothing brand or retailer, this seminar will assist you to initiate and develop your sustainable textile and apparel programme.”
