When you think of clean white uniforms chances are the first thing that comes to mind are hospital outfits. After all, many nurses and doctors make a practice of wearing all white though pastel colours are also popular. But how about an auto manufacturing pland? The new Honda plant in Shelby, Indiana was dedicated November 17, 2008, and one of the most notable features was the fact everyone wears whit pants and promotional clothing white coats. The coats have the Honda logo embroidered on them which promotes company loyalty and staff unity. When you say “everyone” wears white, it means everyone from the president of the company to the maintenance workers. The main point of everyone wearing the crisp looking white clothes is to convey the message all employees of the company are important.
The Honda plant is a stunning display of technology with 1.6 million square feet. Most processes are controlled by computers with employees responsible for quality control and assembly details. Over 260 robots are handle any work considered dangerous for workers to do. The large plant currently is producing 150 cars per day but that is going to increase to 400 as the plant becomes fully operational. The plant will employ 2,080 workers once it is up to full speed. It only takes 2 days to manufacture an auto.
The assembly department manager, Doug Winkle, said, “It is a wonderful feeling to see it all up and running. A year ago, it was just steel beams.”
The state-of-the-art plant is spotless and the white uniforms only enhance the appearance. The cleanliness found in the facility reflects corporate philosophy that all plants are to be kept clean to both preserve auto quality standards and to enhance the working conditions of employees. The opening of the plant could not have come at a better time with the USA in a recession.
