A kindergarten was raising money this week for turkeys to be distributed among the less fortunate by not wearing school uniforms. The kindergartner was part of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish school group who visited the shop on Monday morning to buy turkeys for the local Carnegie-area families. The pupils spent around $80 for twelve turkeys, that each weighed about 12 or 14 pounds. The store, Raceway Plaza Shop 'n’ Save that is in Scott and owned by the Sorbara family, donated two of their turkeys to the cause and sold the others to the pupils at a lower price.
The turkeys will be taken to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Food Pantry in Carnegie for distribution among the needy families. "It's really nice to help them for Christmas, so they can buy food, so they can have a good Christmas dinner," said Sarah Yuzar, a pupil at the Catholic school in Scott. "They're so big and heavy," added Karan Kramer, aged 5. The school had chosen five children to make the trip to the store in a van with two parent chaperones and the school Principal James Churilla.
About 70 pupils had taken part in the event and they raised the turkey money by donating roughly 50 cents each, so that they could shed their school uniforms and wear jeans and jerseys instead to classes during the two days. Some of the money had to be exchanged at the bank, as it comprised of nickels and dimes.
Some pupils such as Tim Castello had donated more than 50 cents because they felt that the people deserved more. "It's great that the students can carry on the mission work [like feeding the hungry] that our patron saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton, carried on for years," Mr. Churilla, the school principal said.
