Cotton lost a lot of its appeal for use in clothing when the synthetic fabrics entered the scene, but that is changing for many reasons. One of the reasons is that you would have a hard time finding a more comfortable materials for t-shirts or uniforms. Cotton is cool and comfortable and can be worn at work or play. But another reason cotton is making a comeback is because it’s a natural fiber that can be grown using eco-friendly methods. As the world becomes more environmentally-friendly, cotton is once again taking center stage.Cotton grown non-organically takes a lot of resources including water and soil. Many chemicals are used to keep the harvest insect free and these chemicals wash into the soil and end up in the aquifer. The Organic Trade Association claims that non-organic cotton farms use 25% of the worlds insecticide applied for farming purposes.
Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown using natural pesticides and insecticides which do not contain harmful chemicals. It is also grown in fields where these chemicals have not been used for at least 3 years. Despite the growing popularity of organic cotton, it still only accounts for .03% of the total cotton grown around the world.
There are more and more brands developing clothing lines made from organic cotton. Some clothing lines are 100% cotton whereas some garments are manufactured using cotton blends. Clothes that are made using organic cotton are usually labelled in a way that makes it clear what percent of the fabric is organic cotton. Department stores are offering organic clothes such as tees in a variety of colours. Thanks to new dyes and dying procedures, the new cotton clothing lines hold their colours as well as synthetic fabrics even after multiple washings.
It costs more to produce organic cotton versus non-organic cotton, but this is expected to change as more and more organic cotton fields are established.
