The University of Tulsa and the University of Utah went head to head at the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl recently at the Texas Christian University's Amon G. Carter Stadium. A pep rally was held on the night before the game. Like similar gatherings, the typical marching bands and cheerleaders were working with the crowd, as usual urging the fans to cheer on their team. On the other side of the square, there were a number of military recruiting displays as the game is being held at the Armed Forces Bowl.
Visitors had the chance to get up close to a tank, Humvee, flight simulator and a mini Raptor. Promotional clothing such as printed T-shirts and hats were being given out, as well as other items such as pens and posters. Bell Helicopter was sponsoring the event and was teamed up in the display booth with Give 2 to the Troops, who are a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the well-being of service members in that are out in combat. The organization does this by raising money and collecting donations to create care packages to hand to these service members. Bell Helicopters' Brad Wanek said that the reason why his company is sponsoring the bowl game is to create additional ways to donate more to the troops and help other service members. Events like this pep rally are great ways for generating interest. "More of the interest that we hope to generate here is not only that we're seeking new recruits, but that we want to be involved in the community," Army Sgt. Chris Taylor said. "We're here to support them." This is Bell Helicopter's first year as the main sponsor for the Armed Forces Bowl and the event is in partnership with America Supports You, which is a Department of Defense program that promotes American peoples support for the members of the armed forces. One of the highlights of the game was at half time, the presentation of the "Great American Patriot Award" to the Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon England.
