T-shirts to Ride Out Recession

Very few markets are projected to ride out the current recession. High fashion is already taking a big punch as consumers opt for more inexpensive clothing items. But t-shirts, the perennial fashion statement, should continue to do well say industry experts.

“The t-shirt industry may take a few hits but will still be standing tall when all is said and done,” says one industry expert. But will all niches in the t-shirt industry fare equally well? Probably not, says this same insider. Some niche markets will soar and some will probably do a nose dive.

The niche market for tourism related t-shirts will probably take the biggest hit. Consumers are not as likely to travel as much during the recession and will not purchase as many souvenirs on trips. The t-shirt stands in tourist resorts will definitely suffer as will their suppliers.

On the other hand, t-shirts for school uniforms and t-shirts for everyday wear will rise during the recession. Consumers are looking for low price point items that are durable and attractive. Their purchases will be basic and value driven.

In the USA, some schools have already begun to take cost into consideration when planning for fall 2009. New uniform guidelines were sent out by several eastern preparatory schools this last week outlining the new uniform choices for parents. T-shirts are now included as a less expensive option to oxfords.

The price of school uniforms is not expected to hurt most private school parents but adding the t-shirt option to public school uniforms will be a big help for those parents. Many school uniform providers are reporting that they are getting quite a few orders to add t-shirts with a school logo to the uniform selections for fall 2009.

So, t-shirts are poised to ride out the recession and still be standing on the other side. In a market that is projected to take a nose dive it is comforting to know that this profitable niche will soar.
