Do School Uniforms Ignore the Individual?

Monday 20th of April 2009 01:03:44 AM
Do School Uniforms Ignore the Individual? Many schools around the world are implementing school uniform policies for the fall semester. This is a new trend in public education, one that existed mostly in the private sector until very recently. There are valid reasons for schools to want students to wear school uniforms but these reasons are often over- shadowed by parent and student complaints.

School uniforms allow students to present themselves in a positive manner. Studies have shown that students who wear school uniforms are less disruptive and more focused. One study even claimed that grades in several schools improved within one year of uniform policies being implemented.

Some parents do not see the immediate benefits of a school uniform. They fear that if all students are wearing the same polo shirt every day they will lose their individuality. They are also concerned with the cost of having to provide the uniforms.

Promotional clothing companies can help ease parents’ fears over school uniform policies. When working with the school it is important to stress the need for options. Not every student will want to wear a button down shirt. Suggest that the school provide t-shirts and polo shirts along with oxfords in several color choices, all with the school logo. Parents are more likely to approve of school uniforms if they have choices.

Price point is another factor that must be addressed with schools investigating the possibility of requiring students to wear uniforms. Promotional clothing companies can suggest several different garments in various price ranges to accommodate all students. For example, a t-shirt can be offered in cotton or cotton blend at different prices.

Addressing these issues will not only make it easier for school authorities to present school uniform policies to parents and students. It will show that the school has thought about the individual needs of the students. Promotional clothing companies should have the information ready to advise schools in their local areas on implementing uniform policies successfully.
