The good news is that retailer confidence is growing and over a third of the businesses reporting had experienced higher sales volumes in May. The bad news is that employment opportunities remain depressed. Over 29 percent of the retailers included in the index have or are planning to reduce the number of employees.
The CBI Chief Economic Advisor summed it up this way: Businesses of all types are looking to reduce stock levels during the recession, to lower demand and to improve cashflow. Retailer's efforts appear to be having an impact, with stock levels lower relative to expected demand, which should help improve conditions along the supply chain." This is one reason that internet retailers selling all goods including uniforms for school or work are doing well despite the economic conditions.
The Chairman of the CBI Distributive Trades Panel, Andy Clarke, added, "Conditions were tough again in May for retailers, proving April's better sales figure was a temporary blip. Trading conditions are expected to remain difficult in June. As for much of htis year, supermarkets and shoes were the ones seeing decent growth. The harsh reality is consumers need good reason to part with their hard-earned cash. Demonstrating you offer value for money as a retailer has never been more important, and marks out the true survivors."
