New York City in the United States holds an annual summer bike event where anyone can enter a 6.9 mile bike run that goes from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park. You don’t have to ride a bike either. You can run or walk if that is your preference. One of the sponsors this year of the events is the company LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton is rated as the world’s leading supplier of luxury goods. Obtaining the sponsorship of such a sterling company is a real coup for the city’s Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. This is only the second year the event has been held and it has already proven to be a stunning success. Louis Vuitton will be the main sponsor and the bike event is just one activity of a 3-day program. Of course it goes without saying that Vuitton will use the event to unveil a new design it has created for the biking enthusiast. The company held a contest called the “Bike in Style” Challenge and the winner was a student, Jessica Velasquez, who is enrolled in the Fashion Institute of Techonology..
Venues such as the New York bike race give even successful companies a great opportunity to test and display new designs. Biking is an athletic activity that demands comfortable clothing. That’s why you see so many bikers wearing promotional clothing during rides because sportswear companies create clothing meant to suit active people. But the fact is that all cotton clothing including t-shirts are suited for events such as the New York bicycle race.
Louis Vuitton created a contest called the Bike in Style Challenge for student fashion designers from the Fashion Institute of Technology so students could design bike outfits for the New York event and to wear as daily bicycle commuting clothing. A company spokesman for Louis Vuitton said, “At LVMH, we do not see luxury in terms of products. We believe that luxury is a lifestyle that should be cultivated, even in tough economic times. Now more than ever, luxury needs to support an art de vivre and a better lifestyle. This is why we created the Bike In Style Challenge. The FIT students captured the enthusiasm and understanding we have seen in the younger generation for combining core values and modern necessities. A bicycle is a wonderful symbol of that and our support of Bike in Style and Summer Streets reflects our commitment to supporting Mayor Bloomberg’s initiatives to make New York a greener, greater City.”
