During difficult financial times such as now, items like printed t-shirts and clothing with logos enable companies to offer the giveaways people have come to expect at events and yet still cut costs.That is exactly why the New York Racing Association chose long and short-sleeved t-shirts and knit ski hats as two of only four giveaways offered this year prior to the season opening race at the Saratoga Race Course. The giveaways are intended to boost sagging attendance that has fallen to an 11-year low. Promotional clothing such as printed t-shirts can generate excitement among sports enthusiasts while they enjoy the feel-good emotions that freebies always seem to generate.
The racing season begins 29-July-2009 and it is hoped that the attendance decline can be cut from 11% last summer to 5% this summer. If the economy improves it is quite possible attendance can rise even more. The season has been extended into September also but it remains to be seen if this will help the course regain losses. Also impacting attendance has been an exceptional amount of rain. A spokesman for the racing enterprise said, “Normally, we might have 25 to 30 races washed off the turf. This year I think it’s been closer to 70.”
To attract bettors to the races there will be a series of promotional events every day of the race. There will be more giveaways, dinners, Bingo game playing, movies, concerts, and other activities. Many of the concession sales will go to assist charities struggling due to the recession.
